Graduates of the Chemical and Biological Engineering Program develop mastery of modern chemical and biological engineering theory and practice through a core curriculum. They gain specialized knowledge through elective courses within and outside of the department.
The master of science in chemical and biological program trains graduate students to become leaders in industrial and university settings. We offer a rigorous program with thesis and non-thesis options, which can be completed in a little as nine months.
Required courses give students broad exposure to advanced topics in core chemical engineering concepts, while technical electives introduce students to the diversity of topics in current chemical and biological engineering practice, including biotechnology, nanoengineering, and sustainability. Projects for a thesis-based master's degree can be solicited from any of the world-class faculty members in the department.
The number of courses you are required to take to earn the master of science in chemical and biological engineering depends on whether you will defend a thesis.
Thesis & Non-Thesis Options
The thesis option requirements include completing of a minimum of seven courses plus at least three units of research that result in the oral defense of a satisfactory thesis.
The non-thesis option requires a minimum of 10 courses. Students who follow the non-thesis option normally complete their studies in nine to 15 months.
