About this course
Expand your subject knowledge while carrying out a major research project with a coastal focus on this MRes Marine Geology and Geophysics: Coastal degree. You’ll be based at National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS), where you’ll access the latest facilities and the research-led teaching of our academic experts. You’ll graduate in the perfect position to continue your studies at PhD level or start a career in a wide range of sectors.
A master of research (MRes) degree differs from a standard MSc in the balance between teaching and research. As an MRes student you’ll spend more time on your research project and less on the taught part of your course.
On this flexible UK master's course, you’ll gain a broad overview of marine geology and geophysics, while gaining the specialist skills and knowledge to carry out a research project focusing on coastal issues.
You'll study a combination of modules that are common to all our marine geology and geophysics pathways and modules specific to the coastal pathway.
Your specialist topics will cover areas such as:
- sediment dynamics
- the processes involved in water properties and their movement in the ocean
- the time and space scales that exist from small scale mixing processes to global ocean circulation
Teaching takes up one-third of the year. The modules you’ll take depend on your choice of research topic.
You’ll spend the rest of the year working on your research project, and writing up your findings in a dissertation.

為來自中國的學生設計 Students need to have a Bachelors degree awarded by a high ranked Chinese university with an average grade of at least 70-88%, dependent on awarding institution. Most of our Masters programmes require you to achieve equivalent to a 2.1. X1 75% or 2.8 GPA, X2 78% or 3.1 GPA, X3 80% or 3.25 GPA, Y1 78% or 3.1 GPA, Y2 83% or 3.5 GPA, Z 88% or 3.7 GPA. IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.5 in reading and writing, 6.0 in listening and speaking.
