Students completing the M.Ed. Curriculum and Instruction option in Math or Science will leave the program with higher standards for themselves and their profession; a sense of connectedness with a community of educators who are grappling with similar questions and issues; the disposition to suspend belief and disbelief as needed; a commitment to practical work guided by deep knowledge and understanding; and a passion for greater understanding.
You should carefully review the Program Requirements for details about all components of the M.Ed. course of study. You must also follow the Degree Requirements of the Graduate School; among these are that a course of study should include at least 18 credits at the 500 level or above as well as 18 graded credits. Note that this program option does not lead to teacher certification.
The M.Ed. in Math or Science requires 45 credits:
- 9 credits in Foundations of Education
- 18 credits in an area of specialization, Science Education or Math Education
- 9 credits of coursework in a supporting area of study
- 9 credits in a Culminating Experience
Areas of Specialization Coursework in Science Education & Sciences (18 credits)
At least 18 credits will be earned through a combination of science education courses (within the College of Education) and natural science courses (outside the College). Two specific courses are required: EDC&I 471 and EDC&I 571. You will select the rest of your courses in the natural sciences with the approval of the faculty supervisor in fields such as biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, oceanography, and other science-related areas. The majority of natural sciences courses should be taken at the 400 level or above.
Coursework in Mathematics & Mathematics Education (18 credits)
At least 18 credits in Mathematics and Mathematics Education are required. Courses should be selected in consultation with your adviser and be appropriate for future career goals. Six to nine credits should be Mathematics Education courses, which include:
- EDC&I 536 Discourse in the Mathematics Classroom
- EDC&I 538 Mathematical Thinking, Curriculum, & Pedagogy
- EDC&I 575 Seminar in Mathematics Education: Elementary
- EDC&I 576 Seminar in Mathematics Education: Secondary
- EDC&I 577 Current Issues in Mathematics Education

為來自中國的學生設(shè)計 Prospective graduate students must meet the following minimum requirements: Hold a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university in the U.S.1or its equivalent from a foreign institution; Have earned at least a 3.0 grade-point-average (on a 4 point scale) for the last 90 graded quarter credits or 60 graded semester credits. Other English Language Requirements: 580 paper-based TOEFL.
