The course of study in Special Education in High-Incidence Disabilities (SEHI) prepares teachers to serve students with high-incidence disabilities such as learning and emotional/behavioral disabilities. There are three degree options for students in the program:
Initial Teaching Certification: Students who are seeking an initial teaching certificate in special education should apply for initial teaching certification. To meet Washington state's upcoming requirement for those holding a special education teaching certificate to get a second endorsement in a content area, our program is set-up to enable you to complete a reading endorsement at the same time as your initial special education certificate. This program will can be completed in 6 or 7 quarters (including summer). It is possible to complete your second endorsement in another content area (e.g., math) but this will extend the length of the program considerably.
Special Education Endorsement: Students who already hold a teaching certificate in Washington state should apply for the special education endorsement program. This program can be completed within four quarters (including summer).
Master's Only: Students with a teaching certificate in Washington state and who already hold a special education endorsement may apply for the Master's only program. This program can be completed within 3 to 4 quarters.
Benefits of the Program
Students enrolled in this program are part of a cohort and take classes together. Each quarter students will spend time in a special education classroom in school districts in the Seattle area. Throughout the program we have students move between placement locations so students have exposure to different special education contexts. Our graduates are very successful finding teaching positions upon graduation. Special education directors often contact the faculty in order to recruit students from our program.
