Help, My Child Is Reading Too Quickly
At I Can Read we see new or young readers make the same mistakes or fall into the same traps all the time. A major trouble spot we see over and over again, is students rushing when they read.
The speediness of the reading inevitably means that they are difficult to understand and they make random guesses about sounds and how fit together within a word. In some instances we see students make up entire words!
When students read too quickly it impacts their ability to read in a coherent manner and be understood. It also presents a big problem for their comprehension of the stories they are reading. This is a problem that could have much bigger implications further down the track.
As Reading Specialists, we are always working with students on fluency goals and reading pace is a big focus area for us. Parents frequently ask us how to tackle this issue and hopefully eradicate it. Below are a few hopefully helpful suggestions on how to help if your child is reading too quickly.
Read Aloud with Your Child
Reading aloud is an effective way of promoting reading fluency. You could even record your child’s reading and play it back to them. This will help them to see first-hand how difficult it is to understand them when they are reading at great speed. Do keep this activity light-hearted though and conducive to making progress. The idea is to motivate them and let them see their error – not to dishearten them. Record yourself making similar silly mistakes, this will make them laugh but also help them realise they are in fact reading too quickly. If they can see the fun and humour in this it will make the process a lot more enjoyable.
Use Texts that have Nonsense Words in Them.
A tried and tested I Can Read approach is ‘nonsense” words. The idea is to tell the student that guessing is no good because some of the words are unique combinations of letters that he or she will never have seen before. Since some of the words are unfamiliar, he or she will approach them with more caution and get in the habit of sounding words out properly. It is a back to basics approach but one that works very well.
Model Reading
We are big fans of “Model Reading’ at I Can Read. Read the passage at a good pace by yourself. After you model the correct speed, read together with the student while pointing at the words. Alternate reading sentences with your child, which should help raise awareness of good pacing. Then have the student read the passage back to you by themselves.
Highlight Punctuation.
Sometimes it is a genuine lack of knowledge regarding punctuation marks. Make sure they know what various important punctuation marks are and what they mean. Use a coloured pen to highlight punctuation in the passage before they begin reading so they are ready for it when they see it. Also ask them to pause and take a breath after each sentence.
Ask the student to retell the story in their own words.
Have the student read and retell the story, if the student is reading too fast and inserting irrelevant words, he or she won’t remember the story well. Once the student understands that the goal is to understand the story rather than arrive at the end of a reading-aloud exercise, they should hopefully think twice and read more carefully.
Try these tips at home and we promise you will see a big improvement in a short time. Remember the path to literacy should be fun and exciting for children. If they do encounter issues it’s important that it doesn’t put them off and that they see the setbacks as temporary. With your home assistance and the guidance of an I can read Reading Specialist, you should see progress in to time and notice happily that your child’s reading pace has slowed down.
Happy Reading!
