國家地理是一個(gè)對(duì)我們雅思閱讀能力提高很有幫忙的網(wǎng)站，上面有很多關(guān)于環(huán)境和人文的文章，難度和雅思閱讀比較接近，可以做為我們課余閱讀訓(xùn)練很好的素材。下面選擇一篇源自國家地理的文章，舉例子來說明一下。這篇文章的內(nèi)容是關(guān)于氣候變暖的，我們簡單選擇其中一些詞匯來解釋一下。
Its there on a monitor: the forest is breathing. Late summer sunlight filters through a canopy（這個(gè)詞是遮篷的意思，但這個(gè)詞相對(duì)就不那么常用，過于學(xué)術(shù)化了） of green as Steven Wofsy unlocks a shed in a Massachusetts woodland and enters a room stuffed with equipment and tangled（纏結(jié)的意思，這個(gè)詞用于此處，形象生動(dòng)地表現(xiàn)了電線和管子纏結(jié)而造成的混亂情景，遠(yuǎn)好于我們經(jīng)常使用且只會(huì)這么用的“full of sth”） with wires and hoses.
The machinery monitors the vital functions of a small section of Harvard Forest in the center of the state. Bright red numbers dance on a gauge, flickering(閃爍搖曳，用來形容監(jiān)控器上的數(shù)字上下跳動(dòng)的狀態(tài)，如果是我們來形容，恐怕只能用jump這么貧乏的詞了吧) up and down several times a second. The reading reveals the carbon dioxide concentration just above the treetops near the shed, where instruments on a hundred-foot (30-meter) tower of steel lattice sniff the air. The numbers are running surprisingly low for the beginning of the 21st century: around 360 parts per million, ten less than the global average. Thats the trees doing. Basking in the sunshine, they inhale （吸入的意思，吸入空氣等時(shí)常用的一個(gè)好詞，我們平時(shí)使用take in這個(gè)短語是可以替換這個(gè)詞的）carbon dioxide and turn it into leaves and wood.
中間段落省去，結(jié)尾段如下：
Who can complain? No one, for now. But the problem is that scientists cant be sure that this blessing（好的事情，我們常用good thing或bad thing等來表示好事壞事，但比較地道的表示法是blessing or curse，即我們所說的福禍，是不是聽起來更書面？）will last, or whether, as the globe continues to warm, it might even change to a curse if forests and other ecosystems change from carbon sinks to sources, releasing more carbon into the atmosphere than they absorb.
