Course overview
This course deals with questions about the nature of reality and human existence. It engages philosophical and ethical questions in the search for meaning and in conversation with religion(s). You will explore the philosophical/moral systems of religions within religious texts, and lived within historic and contemporary, local and global contexts.

You will have the opportunity to develop your own interests and engage contemporary questions with a range of global philosophical and religious traditions.
Teaching methods
You will be taught through lectures, seminars, individual tutorials, group work and one-to-one tutorials. Subject to the restrictions related to the Coronavirus pandemic, there may also be opportunities for study visits and field trips in the UK and/or abroad. Our building houses a computer room, kitchen, student social and study space, and three purpose-built modern lecture rooms.
Assessment
Assessment is mainly by coursework, such as essays, portfolios, presentations, text reviews, field reports, and seminars. Some modules may have a short exam.
Work based learning
We offer an option that explores the different approaches to Religious Education (RE) teaching, and issues related to RE in faith schools. You will explore the relationships between religion, worldviews, education and society and subject to the restrictions related to covid-19, may undertake a placement in a school where you get the chance to shadow an RE teacher. Students can also follow a field study module which allows them to explore the history and culture of Jeruslem and the role of religion in political conflict and peacebuilding. Subject to covid-19, this module may involve an overseas field trip.
