The School of Journalism and Mass Communication offers a Bachelor's of Science degree in journalism as well as a minor in journalism. Journalism majors take a variety of courses designed to provide core skills necessary for the field as well as courses designed to meet individualized interests.
All mass communication majors and journalism minors are required to take MC1313: Media Writing, which teaches basic media writing with a focus on digital skills. Students also take five required courses in the major and then may select four to five additional courses to explore various specialties and interests. Students may select a concentration, which requires 9 hours of specialized study, in either Digital Media or Multimedia Production.
Students who elect not to pursue a concentration are free to select courses from across the mass communication curriculum to build a portfolio catering to individualized interests. Students are encouraged to explore individual courses in digital media, visual journalism, various writing genres, public relations, advertising or international communications.
Required Courses: MC 3321 - News Writing and Reporting I, MC 3383 - Editing for Clear Communication, MC 3390 - Media Design/ or 4315- Web Design Publishing, MC 4321 - News Writing and Reporting II, MC 4386 - Journalism Project - senior capstone course for journalism majors, Additionally, select 12 advanced hours (4 courses) in any area of mass communication plus one course from a variety of 1-hour mass communication courses. Total: 28 hours in journalism and mass communication courses
Concentrations: Concentrations focus on specific areas and provide skill sets designed to serve today's evolving journalism profession. Students who elect a concentration apply the 9-hour concentration toward the 12 hours of advanced mass communication electives required of the B.S. degree. Digital Media concentration (9 hours): Required course: MC 4315-Web Design and Publishing, Choose two courses from: MC 3390-Media Design, 4356H-Multimedia Journalism, 4356I-Visual Storytelling or 4382T-Coding and Digital Skills for Communicators, MC4382U-Advanced Social Media and Analytics. Multimedia Production concentration (9 hours): Required course: MC 3319-Visual Communication, Choose two courses from: MC 3311-Video Production, 3312-Television News, 3390-Media Design, 4312-Photojournalism or 4356I-Visual Storytelling

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) minimum score of 550 (paper-based test) or 213 (computer-based test), or 78 total score (internet-based test) with the following 3 out of 4 minimum section scores: 19 in Reading, 19 in Listening, 19 in Speaking and 18 in Writing; International English Language Testing System (IELTS) minimum score of 6.5 with at least a 6.0 in each section.
