SIU is an important part of the culture of the entire Southern Illinois region. Graduate students in the School of Music are part of that cultural landscape – and have been for generations. We offer the Master of Music degree, with various concentrations. We’ll help you find the right path for your career, and we’ll provide the resources to put it all within reach.
STATEMENT OF PURPOSES:
The objective of this degree is to provide professional preparation for students in pursuit of a career in composition, or to provide preparation for doctoral study in the areas of music theory and/or composition. A special training emphasis exists for students wishing to teach music theory and/or composition at the university level. To achieve this objective, the following goals have been established.
Students must demonstrate: advanced skills in musical analysis, including independent analytical thinking (as evidenced through discussion and writing); ability to conceive of creative analytical approaches which forge deep and meaningful understandings of given musical works; command of the tools of theoretical and/or compositional work (keyboard skills, research skills, technological skills); capability to work independently to solve theoretical/compositional problems; mastery of technical skills of composition (including thorough knowledge of contemporary music and respective compositional techniques, command of a variety of styles and media, and mastery of notation and scoring); conceptual ability to continuously develop unique compositions from initial ideas to finished pieces; evidence of a coherent set of artistic/intellectual goals; successful instruction of core undergraduate music theory curriculum while fulfilling graduate assistant teaching assignments.
Students must demonstrate a high degree of competence in meeting the above goals. They must successfully complete the Comprehensive Examinations and submit a Thesis approved by the Graduate Committee.

為來自中國的學(xué)生設(shè)計 Applicants must have completed 2.7 (on a grading scale with 4.0=A; approximately a "B-" average) on the last two years of bachelor’s coursework; 3.0 on all previous graduate work (approximately a "B" average). English Language Requirement: 550 on the paper based TOEFL; 80 on the internet based TOEFL; 6.5 on the IELTS; 5.0 on the iTep Academic Plus Exam; C1 required on the Cambridge English Exam.
