We understand your time is valuable and appreciate you taking some of it to learn more about our Public Safety Management (PSM) program. Our mission at Southern Illinois University Carbondale begins with a unique tradition of access and opportunity to help you achieve your career goals.
The PSM program has a long and honorable history of supporting the academic needs of Public Safety professionals across this nation. Our goal is to provide YOU, the “Public Safety Professional,” the opportunity to engage in an environment that imbues career enhancement through continued higher education. This PSM program has been crafted to suit the needs of working professionals and build on the “public safety” experience you already have. Students entering the program should either have an associate’s degree or have at least 26 earned credits from a regionally accredited college or university, or career training in public safety. This includes the areas of Fire Safety Management (FSM), Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and Emergency Medical Administration (EMA), all areas offered as undergraduate specializations.
Our dedicated staff includes instructors from various fields of study within the PSM program who are dedicated to sharing their knowledge, training, and years of experience to ensure students are equipped with the skills they need to advance in their careers.
You can find us at locations across the U.S. near key industry partners at the following locations; Joliet Junior College (JJC) in Romeoville, IL, University Center College of Lake County (UCLC) in Grayslake, IL, Chicago Public Safety Headquarters, Chicago, IL.
We are available locally, nationally, and worldwide. Attendance by ZOOM Meeting makes this possible. On the days that we have class at JJC or UCLC, you would log-in using a ZOOM Meeting link and participate in class as if you were sitting there with your fellow classmates. This requires the student to have a program compatible computer with suitable camera and microphone.
The PSM program is accredited by the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) and a long-time participant in the Federal Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) program. In addition to our undergraduate degree, the PSM program offers a Masters of Public Safety and Homeland Security Administration master’s degree. Many public safety graduates also pursue this degree to obtain the credentials required for many leadership roles, as well as academic positions in the varied public safety industries. Together, these degree plans provide multiple career paths for our students and future industry leaders.

為來自中國的學生設計 Students must have completed a high school or equivalent. Academic Requirements (grade point averages are on a 4.0 scale and are calculated by SIU): 26 credits or more at another college/university - submit college/university transcripts showing a GPA of 2.0 or greater on all coursework; 0-25 credits at another college/university - submit high school AND university/college transcripts showing 2.0 GPA on all coursework; 5 Passes on the GCE O or A level exams (under the Cambridge/ed excel model). English Language Requirement: TOEFL - 68 on the internet-based test; TOEFL - 520 on the paper-based test; ITEP - 4.0 (academic plus only); IELTS - 6.0.
