A specialization in Soil Science [Science or General] focuses on the challenges of soil quality management and the evaluation and care of soils by understanding the biological, chemical and physical properties of soil and their effects on plants.
What will I study?
Courses include the principles of soil-water behavior, fertilizer use efficiency and soil ecology in order to influence the sustainability and quality of soil-water resources.
Other classes provide students with advanced knowledge of the dynamic interaction between the soil environment, including soil morphology and soil forming factors, soil chemistry, soil physics and soil microbiology
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Our hands-on academic specialization in Soil Science [Science, General, Environmental] equips students to face a variety of challenges requiring expertise in soil.
Graduates embark on exciting soil-related careers in private industry, universities, regulatory bodies, state conservation and federal agencies, such as the Illinois/U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (Natural Resources Conservation Service and the state Soil-Water Conservation Service).
Job titles include: Soil scientist; Soil conservationist; Soil ecologist; State soil and water quality specialist; Wetland specialist; Research scientist; Environmental technician; Land-use specialist; Natural resource manager; Soil chemist; Soil physicist; Conservation planner; County conservationist; Soil microbiologist; Landscape designers; Commercial greenhouse managers; Nursery and Garden Center managers; Golf course managers.

為來自中國的學生設計 Students must have completed a high school or equivalent. Academic Requirements (grade point averages are on a 4.0 scale and are calculated by SIU): 26 credits or more at another college/university - submit college/university transcripts showing a GPA of 2.0 or greater on all coursework; 0-25 credits at another college/university - submit high school AND university/college transcripts showing 2.0 GPA on all coursework; 5 Passes on the GCE O or A level exams (under the Cambridge/ed excel model). English Language Requirement: TOEFL - 68 on the internet-based test; TOEFL - 520 on the paper-based test; ITEP - 4.0 (academic plus only); IELTS - 6.0.
