Your Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Communication Studies* at SIU can prepare you for a career in business, the arts, social services, government, education, or industry. Your ability to effectively communicate is essential to your potential career success. In our department you can develop the flexible, practical skills you will need after graduation. ABOUT THE GENERAL SPECIALIZATION
Communication Studies is a vast field, so we offer a flexible degree complemented by a diverse selection of classes to ensure a well-rounded education in communication.
This is the specialization for students interested in Human Relations, Sales and Marketing, Advertising, Media Planners, Social Media Managers, Training and Development, Brand Managers, Copywriting, Customer Relations Management, International Relations, Nonprofit Management, Acting, Directing, Producing, Television Writing, Acting Coach, Consulting, Nonprofit Fundraising, and more!
ABOUT THE CORE COMMUNICATION CURRICULUM
Our five core courses will give you a taste of intercultural communication, interpersonal communication, rhetorical communication, business and professional communication, and performance studies.
Beyond the core requirements, choose any courses from among the diverse list of courses we offer to accelerate the timely completion of the degree and become a communication generalist.
If you’d prefer to hone your knowledge and skills in a particular area, to become a communication specialist, choose courses from our recommended specialization pathways (or develop your own pathway).
No matter what pathway you choose, you will learn valuable skills that will propel you towards personal and professional success.
