A specialization in Agricultural Education focuses on collaborative, high-performance teacher training. Students become certified to teach agriculture and have the power to seek change in the agriculture world by educating others on the many possibilities agriculture has to offer.
What will I study?
Courses include many aspects of agriculture, including plant science, animal science, agricultural economics and mechanics.
Other classes combine teaching with hands-on classroom experience and focus on individual needs by preparing the student in teacher training, public relations, leadership training and through student organization functions such as the Collegiate Future Farmers of America and the Agricultural Education Club.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Our advanced academic specialization in Agricultural Education has resulted in 100 percent placement of all teacher education students seeking employment in the last five years.
Students embark on exciting and rewarding careers teaching agriculture in junior and senior high schools, local communities, universities, industries and cooperative extensions.
Agricultural Education graduates may also pursue high-flying careers in the multifaceted agricultural industry; and further their education or scientific interest with a career in communications, social services, production, finance, sales or recreation.
Typically students secure well-paid jobs in a career field that traditionally has unfilled positions every year. They get to share their passion for agriculture and work in both classroom and outdoor settings.
Job titles include: High School Ag Teachers; Community Colleges Instructors; University Professors; Coordinator (of undergraduate and graduate classes in agricultural education); Organizer, Collegiate Future Farmers of America (FFA) and agricultural education clubs; Agricultural Literacy Coordinators; Extension Advisors; Corporate Education Specialist.

Academic Requirements (grade point averages are on a 4.0 scale and are calculated by SIU): 26 credits or more at another college/university - submit college/university transcripts showing a GPA of 2.0 or greater on all coursework; 0-25 credits at another college/university - submit high school AND university/college transcripts showing 2.0 GPA on all coursework; 5 Passes on the GCE O or A level exams (under the Cambridge/ed excel model). English Language Requirement: TOEFL - 68 on the internet-based test; TOEFL - 520 on the paper-based test; ITEP - 4.0 (academic plus only); IELTS - 6.0.
