The Department of Philosophy at SIU offers a major and a minor in philosophy, as well as a pre-law specialization in philosophy. The Department is a pluralistic one with undergraduate courses in a variety of traditions, such as analytic philosophy, phenomenology, American philosophy, Asian philosophy and feminism. The faculty has various specializations: the history of philosophy, logic, ethics, metaphysics, political and legal philosophy, the philosophy of science, philosophy of technology, and philosophy of religion. The Undergraduate program is chartered by the national honor society in philosophy, Phi Sigma Tau.
The student electing to major in philosophy should consult with Andrew Youpa, the Department's Director of Undergraduate Studies (click link to email Dr. Youpa). Early in the senior year, majors should contact a faculty member to direct the writing of the senior thesis. Philosophy majors will satisfy the College of Liberal Arts Writing-Across-the-Curriculum requirement by passing Philosophy 304, 305a, and 305b. A minor is not required for a major in philosophy, though it is recommended that the student take a foreign language, such as Greek, Latin, French, or German.

為來自中國(guó)的學(xué)生設(shè)計(jì) Students must have completed a high school or equivalent. Academic Requirements (grade point averages are on a 4.0 scale and are calculated by SIU): 26 credits or more at another college/university - submit college/university transcripts showing a GPA of 2.0 or greater on all coursework; 0-25 credits at another college/university - submit high school AND university/college transcripts showing 2.0 GPA on all coursework; 5 Passes on the GCE O or A level exams (under the Cambridge/ed excel model). English Language Requirement: TOEFL - 68 on the internet-based test; TOEFL - 520 on the paper-based test; ITEP - 4.0 (academic plus only); IELTS - 6.0.
