The major in cinema and photography is focused on the history, theory, and practice of the still and moving image within the broader framework of contemporary arts practices, evolving technologies, and a media arts education that is grounded in the arts and the humanities. The course of study favors the integration of theory and practice and emphasizes experimentation and exploration across cinema, photography, and their varied extensions in analog, digital, computational and live arts practices, e.g., installation, performance, and the creation of immersive environments. It prepares students for careers in fine arts, commercial, professional, and educational settings; to explore the social, cultural, and political implications of media arts and culture; and, to engage with contemporary media arts practices.
THE MAJOR HAS THREE SPECIALIZATIONS: CINEMA; MEDIA ARTS; PHOTOGRAPHY.
Beginning with a set of foundational courses that integrate theory and practice in an interdisciplinary introduction to media arts, students may select from intermediate and advanced courses to specialize in cinema, photography or media arts.
PHOTOGRAPHY
The Photography Specialization results in a Bachelor of Arts degree in Cinema and Photography. Required coursework includes study of fine art and commercial photography. Fine art photography instruction encourages you to realize your own personal vision. Study topics include digital imaging, large format photography, and advanced color photography. The courses all allow for experimental digital and wet chemistry darkroom techniques. There are opportunities for individual artistic expression through studio workshops and advanced courses. Commercial photography courses offer the chance to learn professional skills in areas including large format photography and digital imaging. The program explores advertising, illustration and publication/editorial photography.

Academic Requirements (grade point averages are on a 4.0 scale and are calculated by SIU): 26 credits or more at another college/university - submit college/university transcripts showing a GPA of 2.0 or greater on all coursework; 0-25 credits at another college/university - submit high school AND university/college transcripts showing 2.0 GPA on all coursework; 5 Passes on the GCE O or A level exams (under the Cambridge/ed excel model). English Language Requirement: TOEFL - 68 on the internet-based test; TOEFL - 520 on the paper-based test; ITEP - 4.0 (academic plus only); IELTS - 6.0.
