Learning another language will enrich your life and expand your opportunities. Develop a high level of fluency in a specific language and culture by specializing in one of our language and culture areas Classics, East Asian Languages & Culture, French, German, or Spanish. For international business, try our Foreign Language & International Trade program, and complement your language study with courses in economics and business and an internship abroad. Or combine your language study with classes on global and regional issues in our International Studies program.
LANGUAGES AND CULTURES SPECIALIZATIONS
These specializations provide a humanistic education that deepens students’ knowledge of their chosen language and culture. Students may specialize in: Classics; East Asian Language and Culture; Foreign Language and International Trade; French, German, or Spanish; International Studies.
Teacher Education Program. French, German, or Spanish students may choose to enter the Teacher Education Program and pursue a license to teach in Illinois. They may secure a K-12 teaching license in French, German, or Spanish while earning either a B.A. in the College of Liberal Arts or a B.S. in the College of Education and Human Services.
Students specializing in French, German, or Spanish and pursuing a K-12 teaching license may choose to earn a B.A. from the College of Liberal Arts or a B.S. from the College of Education and Human Services. Students completing either degree will acquire the necessary training and licensure to pursue a career in foreign language education at the secondary level. Whichever degree they pursue, students must work closely with advisors in both the Department of Languages, Cultures, and International Trade and the Teacher Education Program (TEP) to ensure that they are meeting all degree and teaching licensure requirements in a timely manner.

Academic Requirements (grade point averages are on a 4.0 scale and are calculated by SIU): 26 credits or more at another college/university - submit college/university transcripts showing a GPA of 2.0 or greater on all coursework; 0-25 credits at another college/university - submit high school AND university/college transcripts showing 2.0 GPA on all coursework; 5 Passes on the GCE O or A level exams (under the Cambridge/ed excel model). English Language Requirement: TOEFL - 68 on the internet-based test; TOEFL - 520 on the paper-based test; ITEP - 4.0 (academic plus only); IELTS - 6.0.
