When international students first enter a North American university, many are often surprised by the gap between the academic English language skills expected of them compared to their own general English language skills. Combined with a new environment and differences in culture, international students can feel overwhelmed and under-prepared; in fact, many find themselves struggling academically.
Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Pre-University Program focuses on helping international students overcome these obstacles. International students who meet the University’s admission standards, but who require additional training in academic English and learning skills, will be placed in the Pre-University Program. This positive and supportive learning environment prepares them for academic success upon entry to the degree program of their choice.
Program Highlights
- The Pre-University Program is a 15 week course of study, offered three times in the academic year, with start and end times that correspond with the University’s academic calendar.
- Upon entering the Pre-University program, students receive conditional admission to one of the three undergraduate degree programs offered at FDU–Vancouver.
- Academic English language classes address the most common causes of difficulty for international students: meeting expectations for reading, writing and conducting research at a university level, and leading and participating effectively in discussion seminars.
- Students study background knowledge, technical terminology and communication skills required for the degree program they plan to study. Students also develop study skills and learning strategies to ensure success in their university-level courses.
- Small classes ensure students of highly personalized attention from instructors to meet their unique needs.
- The Learning Resources and Support Center provides additional support in language and academic content tutoring to students.
