Our versatile programme is designed to train you as a mathematical statistician and, as such, provide you with the necessary tools to develop your own cutting-edge statistical techniques to collect, analyse and interpret data.Our three-year programme shares its core modules with our BSc (Hons) Mathematics, where you will encounter modules on Group Theory, Number Theory, Real Analysis and Graph Theory, as well asmodules on Optimisation Techniques, Statistical Methods, Artificial Intelligence and Cryptography.The course has been structured to introduce you to the major branches of mathematics and statistics, enabling you to develop your understanding of the coherence, logical structure and wide applications of mathematics. You also discover the values of research and in-depth study using mathematical tools and resources and have opportunities to model various phenomena and interpret numerical data.In Year 1, you study Calculus, Linear Algebra with Differential Equations, Algorithms and Computer Programming, Probability and Statistics, Analysis, and Discrete Mathematics.In Year 2, you take an in-depth look at Numerical Methods and Statistical Methods.In your final year, you progress to Optimisation Techniques and Fundamentals of Surrogate Modelling, and carry out your own Independent Project and Seminar tailored to your interests.There is a range of optional modules which may include Statistical Methods, Metric Space and Topology, Philosophy of Mathematics, Cryptography, and Fundamentals of Machine Learning.With our blended approach to learning you will encounter a combination of teaching techniques such as: flipped-learning, research projects, oral presentations, essay writing, in conjunction with standard lectures, seminars and small group discussions.If you choose to study Mathematics and Statistics at Winchester, your career opportunities are not only numerous, they’re also likely to be fairly well paid.
