The Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts programs in Chemistry at St. Edward’s University explore how material substances interact, combine and change.
Coupling a Chemistry major with the liberal arts experience offers an education that is both broad and diverse. General education coursework complements the Chemistry major by teaching students to synthesize a range of knowledge, perspectives and creative methods; identify and respond creatively and effectively to local and global challenges; address complex societal issues; understand the importance of and develop the capacities for self-assessment and ethical reasoning; and evaluate arguments and address complex issues using quantitative analysis and scientific reasoning. Both degree tracks provide comprehensive exploration of chemistry that will prepare students for advanced programs or professional careers. Coursework spans the breadth of each of the five chemistry sub-disciplines: analytical, organic, inorganic, physical and biochemistry.
Students pursuing a degree in Chemistry have two degree tracks to choose from.
1. Bachelor of Science in Chemistry
The BS in Chemistry is a rigorous course of study that incorporates more math and laboratory experience. This degree track is intended primarily to meet the needs of a student who wishes to seek employment in the chemical industry or to prepare for graduate study in Chemistry.
2. Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry
This degree track provides more opportunities to take non-science-related courses for a broader-based education and is intended primarily for those students who wish to teach at the secondary school level or would like to use Chemistry as a supporting discipline.
