The Bachelor of Arts in History at St. Edward’s engages you in the fascinating study of the human story, which informs us about our past and helps us to be actively engaged in our world today. The History major will learn about the richness and diversity of experiences that have unfolded over time and place, and how our understanding of our history is built and understood through the sophisticated analysis of sources.
History at St. Edward’s is taught to build your capacity to evaluate and analyze material and apply it to complex questions. You’ll delve into a broad range of topics from Chinese History to Radicals and Reformers, allowing you to learn about a wide variety of interests in your passion to understand the past. Over the course of your studies as a History major, you will have substantial flexibility to choose courses that align with their interests. By following the curriculum, these courses work together to
- Build the skills of finding and analyzing evidence
- Understand the perspectives of the past
- Develop and communicate arguments
- Learn how to understand and appreciate other people and cultures
- Study the impact of people, ideas, and events on communities and the evolution of societies.
Through the building of an increasingly sophisticated set of skills through courses that provide a broad range of knowledge of the world and nurturing these skills prepares the History major for careers that require critical thinking, analytical skills and flexibility with others. This includes work in teaching, government service, private business, law and much more.
Major Requirements: The Bachelor of Arts in History requires 37 hours of History major courses, which include introductory courses in U.S. and World history, and advanced courses in U.S., European, and World History. Through these courses students build skills that help prepare them for future interests in a broad range of career fields.
Electives: In addition to History classes, students complete 29 hours of elective courses in any area of study they choose. These courses do not have to relate to the History major.
General Education Requirements: The History degree requires 54 hours of general education courses that students complete over four years in addition to their major courses and electives.
