The Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design at St. Edward’s University engages students in an exciting and challenging program designed to empower students to tackle creative problem-solving.
Designers play an important role in society, sharing and creating knowledge and experiences. They contribute to the formation and expression of complex societal ideas and values. In preparation for a career or further studies in design, you will first study traditional print design, and then dive into the continuously changing world of digital design.
You'll examine:
- How graphic designers shape the visual environment through typography, image and form
- The history, theory, methods and technology of design
- The contexts in which design is created and used
- Symbols, typography and language used to communicate
Prepare to be challenged to create for multiple mediums, including: publications, websites, everyday objects and ephemera
Graduates of this program are primed to become effective conceptual thinkers, in addition to acquiring the critical thinking skills for understanding the creation and use of design. They'll also master foundational color theory and layout skills.
Transfer students are required to submit portfolios for review by Graphic Design department faculty before registering for courses where transfer credit for prerequisites has been given.
Major Requirements: The BA in Graphic Design requires 49 hours of graphic design major courses, which include a combination of introductory coursework, visual studies, art, and graphic design.
General Education Requirements: The Graphic Design degree requires 57 hours of general education courses that students complete over four years in addition to their major courses and electives.
A few examples of the Graphic Design major courses students take:
Interactive Design -This course explores design issues unique to user-centered interaction in digital media. Students examine a range of formal and conceptual issues, including user interface, organization, narrative, motion, time and sound.
Social Design -This course explores issues of responsibility and how designers participate, shape and criticize the world around us.
Image Methodology -The purpose of this class is to teach strategies and processes for developing and utilizing original images. Whether the images are digital or analog, students learn to seek the full potential of an image and exploit the possibilities within it.
