In addition to learning the knowledge and skills required to be a community health counselor — with an emphasis on counselor ethics — you’ll also acquire advocacy, case management, social and public policy skills. This Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs(CACREP) accredited program was created in 2006 and is approved by the New York State Education Department as a license-eligible academic program.

The program focuses on the preparation of professionals who have the commitment, knowledge, skills, attitudes, values and self-awareness to offer quality counseling services. Can be pursued on a full-time or part-time basis up to the point of internship.

The importance of a multifaceted approach to the preparation of counselor candidates, emphasizing knowledge and skills about self, processes and content in counseling interactions. An open stance on counseling approaches rather than providing specialization in any one point of view. Candidates to become professionals in the broadest sense of the term. This includes preparing candidates to take their places as fully contributing members of the counseling profession and of society as a whole. The inter-relatedness of the individual, the family and social systems. Excellence in teaching, supervision of students’ clinical practice and scholarly work and faculty advisement.

The mission of the Counselor Education Department at SUNY Plattsburgh is to educate persons to become professional counselors and educators who have the commitment, knowledge, skills and self-awareness to offer quality counseling and advising, developmental and prevention services to individuals, groups and families in educational and community settings. The Counselor Education Department is further dedicated to preparing professional counselors who have a working knowledge of ethical standards of practice, have developed cultural self-awareness and skills for working effectively with diverse populations and have committed to ongoing professional development.

為來自中國(guó)的學(xué)生設(shè)計(jì) Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution; a grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. International students must meet all the requirements for admission to the graduate programs specified above. In addition, they must have a TOEFL score of 550 PBT, 83 IBT or 7.5 IELTS.
