The writing arts major is designed for students who would like to develop their talent and interest in writing and pursue careers where they can use their skill sets.
What Will I Learn?
A staff of dedicated and established writers and editors guide students to hone craft and techniques in creative and professional writing. The program offers a variety of introductory and advanced writing courses in poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, script writing and professional writing.
What is Unique About Our Program?
Writing arts at SUNY Plattsburgh includes courses in professional writing, such as grant writing, as well as numerous opportunities to learn the about the business end of writing. For example, our magazine editing courses offer a practicum in design, editing, promotion and the creation and launching of social media platforms: Saranac Review and Z-Platt. Writing arts students attend a series of literary readings and have a variety of internship opportunities. Courses abroad offer students opportunities to experience literature and writing in international settings such as London, Paris or Barcelona.
What Are My Career Opportunities?
Writing arts majors have found employment in various fields such as editing and publishing, marketing and public relations, finance, library science and communications, among others. Those who choose to earn the M.F.A. in creative writing have been accepted to excellent M.F.A. programs.
