If you want to work with young children, early education and care prepares you to teach and lead in private daycare and preschool settings. Focus in areas such as leadership, literacy, early intervention, family integration and involvement, and early childhood policy.
The English department at Salem State offers a diverse and enthusiastic faculty ready to fully engage your intellect and imagination, with a broad and innovative array of classes, concentrations in areas such as film studies, creative writing, professional writing, and literature, and a unique and inspiring setting in beautiful and historic Salem, MA. Classes are small and student-focused, and are led by a faculty at the forefront of their respective fields. English majors at Salem State go on to successful careers in education, publishing, business, public service. Most importantly, a degree in English from Salem State prepares students to think critically and creatively about their role in a rapidly changing cultural and professional environment.

- EEC 205 Assessment, Planning, and Instruction in Early Childhood Education
- EEC 207 Supporting Dual Language Learners and Their Families in Early Childhood
- EEC 250 Emergent Literacy and Language Development
- EDC 405 Culturally Responsive Teaching
- EDC 415 Teaching Students with Exceptional Learning Needs
The following four pre-practicum courses (with field experience) must be taken together
- EEC 301 Integrating Social Studies and Creative Arts in Early Childhood
- EEC 302 Integrating Mathematics and Science in Early Childhood
- EEC 303 Integrated Approach to Teaching Literacy to Young Children
- EEC 304 Integrated Curriculum Lab
