The Communication Studies Department offers a Masters of Arts degree in Communication Studies. Our program provides students with advanced instruction in the major theories and research methods in the academic discipline of communication. Our graduates typically go on to doctoral programs or become communication instructors at the community college level. We provide students with a broad foundation in the discipline of communication. As such, we do not offer areas of specialty, but students can take a variety of elective courses.
This degree allows the student to construct a personalized program that draws from the following areas: rhetorical, interpersonal, organizational, or intercultural communication, performance studies, forensics or instructional communication.
PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES
Objectives: The MA in Communication Studies is designed to:
Introduce students to the history and diversity of the communication discipline Provide in-depth instruction in the major theories at the foundation of the communication discipline Develop students’ critical reading and writing skills Train students to collect, analyze, interpret, and present data Develop students’ competencies as instructors in higher education Develop students’ understanding of key communication skills necessary for leadership and participation in diverse communication settings
