The art history graduate program prepares students with the necessary research skills and experiences to enter the professional fields of teaching, museum work, art gallery management, art consultancy, arts management, and art writing, or to continue their studies at the doctoral level at another university. A student may also pursue the Certificate Program in Museum and Curatorial Studies as a program in study itself, or in combination with a program of study directed toward the achievement of a MA or MFA (with 9 units counted for both the certificate and degree).
Goals
Our MA in Art with Concentration in Art History is centered on the following goals for student learning outcomes:
Students develop a broad general knowledge of the history of art, and extensive knowledge in an area of specialization. Students become versed in historiography and methods of scholarship. Students demonstrate reading proficiency in a minimum of one foreign language. Students develop advanced abilities in undertaking, synthesizing, and effectively disseminating independent research.
Duration
Graduate degree program duration is contingent upon the number of units completed per semester, and time taken to complete Thesis. The MA degree usually is completed in 4 to 8 semesters.
Student Learning Outcome Goals
MA in Art, Concentration in Art History
Students develop a broad general knowledge of the history of art, and extensive knowledge in an area of specialization. Students become versed in historiography and methods of scholarship. Students advance to candidacy for the MA degree with a strong seminar paper that is approved by the members of the student’s thesis committee. Students develop advanced abilities in undertaking, analyzing, synthesizing, and effectively communicating independent research, culminating with a written thesis.
