The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Humanities is an innovative major that allows students to explore the perspectives of and connections among multiple disciplines such as History, Philosophy, Literature, Art, and the Humanistic Social and Behavioral Sciences.
The Humanities major offers more flexibility and choice in course selection than most majors, allowing students to explore a wide range of subjects while developing crucial academic skills. Through the Humanities curriculum, students learn to think clearly and critically about issues that confront human beings during the course of their personal and professional lives. Also, the Humanities program promotes intellectual inquiry, independent and cooperative work, as well as analysis, problem solving, interpretation, research methodology, effective communication and imagination. These skills are essential for success in any profession or endeavor.
Emphasizing critical reading/interpretation, writing, and thinking skills, as well as interdisciplinary approaches to problem solving, the program in Humanities prepares students for professional life, civic life, and a lifetime of learning and personal growth as noted below:
The acquisition of broad-based, interdisciplinary critical and communication skills emphasized by the program in Humanities can enhance your performance in whatever career you might choose, whether you are beginning a new career or seeking advancement in an existing career. These skills are especially important for careers in public policy, law, consulting, education, and management, as well as for careers in the new global economy.
A capacity for independent and critical thinking is essential to participate effectively and conscientiously as citizens of our communities, countries, and world. This capacity will only grow more important in an increasingly globalized world, characterized by a complex, interrelated web of rapidly evolving relationships transcending geographical and cultural boundaries.
