Mechanical engineering technologists apply principles of mechanics and energy to the design, manufacturing and operation of machinery and other mechanical devices. They work in three general areas: energy, structures and mechanical systems, and manufacturing. Energy is the technical field that deals with power generation; heating, ventilation, and air conditioning; refrigeration; and the effective and efficient use of energy and its conversion from one form to another. The field of structures and mechanical systems is involved with the design, development and building of automobiles, airplanes, and trains. Manufacturing deals with the design and development of machine tools and manufacturing processes.
The Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Technology curriculum at Fairleigh Dickinson offers a 50/50 combination of theoretical and laboratory coursework. The program is most suitable for students who prefer applications and hands-on laboratory experience over theory. The degree is offered through the Gildart Haase School of Computer Sciences and Engineering, located within University College: Arts · Sciences · Professional Studies at the Metropolitan Campus. Students who have a strong inclination towards math, sciences and technology, who simply like to tinker, or who are curious to know how things work typically do well in engineering technology. Positive attitudes, willingness to work hard, self-discipline, perseverance, and high motivation play a major role in the students' academic success as well as in their engineering technology career.
Career Opportunities:
Mechanical engineering technology is the second largest engineering technology discipline. Employment opportunities for mechanical engineering technologists are enormous. They are employed in the technical fields of power generation, packaging, process control, production supervision, plant operation, manufacturing, quality assurance and reliability testing, test and field services, robotics, automotive industry, heating, ventilating and air conditioning. Their job functions include design, testing, installation, development, sales and field services. The job market for mechanical engineering technologists has been excellent since mechanical engineering technology is one of the hottest technology fields. The average starting salary of mechanical engineering technology graduates is over $50,000, much higher than for those in the non-technical disciplines.
