The Psychology Major has three principal objectives:
- To provide a broad background in the scientific study of human behavior and mental processes.
- To provide students with a set of core competencies (e.g., research skills, interpersonal skills) useful in a wide variety of careers and in their personal lives. A complete listing of these competencies can be obtained from the psychology department.
- To prepare those students who seek a professional career in psychology with the basic knowledge and tools necessary for graduate study.
Students concentrating in psychology must complete a minimum of 32 credits of course work in psychology. Students should see College requirements for details of the general education requirements. The required courses and suggested sequence are:
- PSYC1201 General Psychology (first or second semester)
- PSYC2210 Psychological Statistics (third semester)
- PSYC2211 Experimental Psychology (fourth semester)
- PSYC4291 Schools of Psychology
Concentration in Behavioral Neuroscience)
The psychology department, in conjunction with the biological and allied health sciences and chemistry and geology departments, offers a course of study leading to a BA in psychology with a concentration in behavioral neuroscience. This is designed for students wishing to earn a baccalaureate degree with an emphasis on the physiological basis of behavior. The curriculum of 128 credits is structured to maximize the benefits available through the interdisciplinary study of psychology, biology and chemistry. Undergraduate course requirements provide for the integrated understanding of the pharmacology of drug action and brain function as they relate to the discipline of behavioral neuroscience.
Industrial/ Organizational Psychology
The specialization in industrial/organizational psychology is designed to equip the graduate with a working knowledge of practices and procedures in applying psychology in a variety of organizational settings.
