The Master of Arts (MA) in History from Wichita State combines an engaging, academically rich environment, faculty who take personal interest in your intellectual growth and the opportunities for applied learning found in Kansas’ largest city. The program is ideal preparation for pursuing your Ph.D. and opens doors to a wide variety of careers.
Curriculum
To complete the degree, student can choose from three options:
- Thesis – Complete a minimum of 31 credit hours and pass a written exam in one comprehensive field and an oral defense of your thesis
- Non-thesis – Complete a minimum of 33 credit hours and pass written exams in two comprehensive fields
- Thesis Program in Local and Community History – Complete a minimum of 35 hours, a written exam and oral defense of thesis.
Comprehensive Fields
Students may select from the following areas for their comprehensive examinations:
- U.S. History
- The Ancient and Medieval Worlds
- Modern Europe
- Local and Community History
Written examinations will be scheduled to take place during a two week period following the spring and fall breaks.
Applied Learning
Students in the MA in History program are required to complete an applied learning or research experience to graduate from this program.
- For students choosing the thesis option, the requirement can be met by completing HIST 725 and HIST 802.
- For students choosing the non-thesis option, the requirement can be met by completing HIST 725.
Careers
A degree in history from Wichita State is great preparation for advanced study in law, political science, history, communications, library science and many other degrees. Graduates have a strong foundation of knowledge for careers in politics, education, the military, Foreign Service, business and more.

為來自中國的學(xué)生設(shè)計(jì) Applicants for full-standing degree admission to the specialist and master’s programs typically must have: Earned a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution or a recognized institution in another country whose requirements for the bachelor’s degree are substantially equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree. The minimum acceptable scores for most programs are: TOEFL - 79 on the Internet-based test, or 550 on the paper-based test. IELTS - minimum overall band score of 6.5 is required. PTE Academic - 58.
