The Master of Fine Arts degree in studio art is awarded for a high level of professional competence, so the student will select an emphasis in a studio area. Ceramics, inter-media, metals, painting and drawing, photography, and sculpture are available. The program of study is 60 hours of graduate credit, including 39 credit hours of studio art, 12-18 of which must be in the concentration and 12 in graduate studio; 12 credit hours in art history, with a minimum of three in modern art since 1945 and three credits of non-Western recommended; and three credit hours in contemporary art theory. In the final year of study, the M.F.A. candidate will complete two semesters of thesis, culminating in a thesis exhibition, a thesis monograph, a gallery talk and an oral comprehensive examination.
