The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival has cited the University of New Haven as having one of the best emerging new theater programs in New England. As a theater arts major at the University of New Haven, you’ll be completely immersed in a creative environment that develops, nurtures, and showcases your creative talents.
You’ll explore all aspects of theater, from acting and dance to design, directing, and playwriting, while you also:
- Study the history of theater
- Develop your dramatic skills, become adept at stagecraft, and hone the organizational skills needed for stage management
- Direct a one-act play
- Create adaptations of literary texts for theater
- Have the option to focus your studies in one of three concentrations: acting/performance, design/production, or literary theater
- Explore the potential theater has to create social change
- Participate in productions as a performer, writer, director, designer, stage manager, dramaturge or technician
- Work with professionals based in New Haven and New York City
- Have the opportunity to perform with New Haven’s Elm Shakespeare Company
- Get hands-on experience through an internship
- Have the chance to spend a semester at the National Theater Institute at the Eugene O’Neill Theater or to study abroad
University Core Curriculum (40 credits)
Students must complete the University Core Curriculum with the following restrictions:
- CC 9.1 - Any course in this category except those with prefix will fulfill Core requirements.
- Students may take any combination of Tier 2 Core Courses, but courses with a THEA prefix will not fulfill Core requirements.
