The B.S. in Psychology is designed to provide a knowledge base of current methods, content areas, and theories. It seeks to facilitate the development of intellectual skills and characteristics that enhance the student's lifelong personal and career success. The program begins with a general psychology course and includes courses in quantitative methods and experimental design. Additional coursework is selected from a broad range of available courses. Students are encouraged to pursue breadth across the areas of psychology, particularly when planning for advanced study in psychology. The department does, however, identify sets of courses particularly relevant for students interested in applied experimental, clinical, industrial/organizational, or human factors (engineering) psychology.
Goals for the Psychology Major are: Students will be able to define, interpret, and apply major concepts, theories, and findings in psychology; Students will be able to compute, analyze, and interpret quantitative and qualitative psychological data; Students will be able to recognize, analyze, and design experimental and non-experimental research in psychology; Students will be able to interpret and produce scientific writing in psychology using standard APA format; Students will be able to identify, recognize, and apply principles of ethics and respect for individual, social, and cultural differences; Students will be able to apply discipline information to decisions about careers in psychology and related fields.
Careers
One of the first questions that students ask about careers is whether they can find a job with a B.S. in psychology. Graduating with a B.S. in psychology prepares you for one of two things. Many students use their major in psychology as part of the requirements to earn their bachelor's degree, following which they either seek employment or continue in their present employment. Other students pursue graduate study in psychology or a related field after earning their bachelor's degree. The American Psychological Association publishes extensive information on careers in psychology.
