在這里學(xué)什么?
The Department of History offers an accelerated program offering the Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in History that allows students to earn potentially both degrees in a five year period.
In the History Department we have a strong faculty who are active teacher-scholars pursuing research, publishing books and articles, and winning awards and grants. They bring the latest methods and historical interpretations to the classroom. The Department's strengths lie within American and European history, but we also have faculty members who cover Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Russia. Currently we have seventeen faculty members who offer graduate courses and fifty to sixty students enrolled in the program during any given semester. Classes are small, usually eight to fifteen students, and most often meet at night to accommodate the many students who work.
Related Experiences
The History Department's Practicum program is a component of Old Dominion University's Career Advantage Program which guarantees any student practical work experience related to their major. History majors with junior or senior standing can participate in an internship which is tailored to an individual's interest and skills. Our students have been historical interpreters at Colonial Williamsburg and the National Park Service's Colonial National Historical Park. They have helped to create exhibits at the MacArthur Memorial Museum, Mariner's Museum, and the War Memorial Museum of Virginia. They have researched the architectural and historic significance of local landscapes for Virginia's Department of Historic Resources. Participants must be highly motivated! Students are expected to work 8xad to 15 hours a week for a semester and will earn 3 credits towards their major.
Careers
History majors find work in a variety of fields. History teaches critical thinking, communication, and research skills that are valued by many employers. History majors often pursue careers in government, business, libraries, museums, archives, publishing, historic preservation, industry, journalism, and public relations. Our majors also make exceptional teachers. History is an excellent undergraduate major for anyone thinking of law school or pursuing graduate work in history.
