The Master of Arts in Liberal Studies enables adult, working students to:
- Enrich workplace credentials with graduate study that is tailored to meet specific areas of need and interest,
- Access rigorous graduate education that is priced within the means of moderate-income, working residents of Long Island and New York, and
- Enhance skills in fact-based analysis, in-depth research, critical understanding, ethical decision-making, digital literacy and public presentation.
Create Your Own Curriculum
Students create a customized academic plan, focused on their particular areas of interest that is designed to achieve their specific objectives. Students complete the degree through 30 semester hours of in-class courses, independent studies, and/or internships. With an emphasis on analysis, cultural sensitivity, ethical decision-making and community engagement, the program offers a creative approach to graduate study for students already working in, or simply having a passion for, teaching, culture and the arts, government, business, human service, and more.
Start Strong
All students participate in the MALS Core Seminar, which provides a foundation in cross-disciplinary analysis and methodology. Offered at Old Westbury each September, the seminar provides a strong foundation to prepare students to conduct their pursuit of interdisciplinary knowledge and academic skills.
Flexible Structure
Students create their 30-credit degree through an individualized combination of courses developed in consultation with the Graduate Director and faculty advisor.
- 3 Semester Hours: Core Seminar -- variable topics course
- 21-24 Semester Hours: A combination of in-class courses, independent studies, and online courses with thematic or disciplinary concentrations relevant to the students workplace needs
- 3 or 6 Semester Hours: Capstone Thesis Project or Capstone Internship

為來自中國的學生設計 Admission to the College is based on an earned bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): A minimum score of 550 on the paper version, 213 on the computer version or an 80 on the Internet version is required. A score of 6.5 (IELTS) is required. iTEP score: Score of 4.0, Step EIKEN test: Grade 1.
