With a foundation in Spanish language, the Spanish Language, Hispanic Literature and Culture degree permits students to focus on Hispanic culture, especially literature and history, on both sides of the Atlantic. With some additional courses in Teacher Education, the major earns a provisional certification in the teaching of Spanish.
Curriculum- Spanish Language, Hispanic Literature & Culture, B.A.
Majors must complete 44 credits in Spanish Language, Hispanic Literature and Culture. Students may choose between two options. Option I is for students interested in language acquisition and Hispanic culture and civilization. Option II is for students interested in Hispanic literature, culture and civilization. Spanish Language, Hispanic Literature and Culture majors must maintain a minimum grade point average within the major of 2.70 (B-). Only courses with grades of C+ or better count towards the credits required for the major.
At the end of ML 3100 (or any ML 3000 level grammar course) students with a 2.3 (C+) GPA will be required to take the OPI exam and to pass it with a minimum of “Low Intermediate.” By the end of ML 3100 (or any ML 3000 level grammar course) students with a GPA lower than 2.3 will not be allowed to continue in the Spanish Language, Literature and Culture major.
