Industrial engineers are concerned with increasing productivity through people, methods, and technology with careful study of the product requirements, design, manufacturing, and information systems. As companies look to reduce costs and raise productivity, they increasingly will turn to industrial engineers to develop efficient processes and reduce costs, delays, and waste. One of the highest growth areas in engineering is projected to be Industrial Engineering (IEEE USA Today, March 2009).
The U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported, in spite of the declining manufacturing industry in the U.S., industrial engineering employment is expected to grow 20% over the next 8-10 years, almost double the rate of the average for engineering professions and other occupations. This rate is expected to also be high in the state of Michigan. Many industrial engineers become managers. Engineering Management is closely related to Industrial Engineering due to nature of the profession. The Bureau of Labor Statistics also reports an expected 9% national growth rate for engineering management from 2010 to 2020. Engineers seeking to move up the career ladder are getting master's degrees in engineering management. Companies could see greater value added engineers with dual program on MSIE and MEM.
The dual program for the Master of Science in Industrial Engineering (MSIE) and Master of Engineering Management (MEM) at Lawrence Tech is designed so that students will obtain advanced knowledge of the industrial engineering and engineering management to be successful in a real-world environment. The dual program requires a total of 51 course credits including all the core courses from both programs.
Online options are available for the Dual Master of Science in Industrial Engineering (MSIE) and Master of Engineering Management (MEM) degree through LTU Online.
