The B.A. program emphasizes the humanistic elements of anthropology and culture. The B.S. program emphasizes the humanistic and scientific elements in anthropology and culture. As an anthropology major, you will:
Excavate and interpret remains left by past cultures
Examine human biology and its relationships to culture and behavior
Explore the role of culture in society from local and global perspectives
Understand the interaction of culture and language
Departmental Requirements (18 hours)
All Anthropology majors MUST take the following 6 courses to gain an understanding of the breadth of the discipline.
ANTH 210 - Cultural Anthropology (C) [SGR #3]
ANTH 220 - Physical Anthropology [SGR #3]
ANTH 230 - Introduction to Archaeology (C) [SGR #3]
ANTH 280 - Socio-Cultural Theory
ANTH 485 - Practice of Anthropology (Capstone course taken in junior year)
ANTH 490 - Seminar (C)

English language requirements: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) - 71 or higher (iBT); 530 or higher (paper test); IELTS (International English Language Testing System) - 5.5 or higher; ACT or SAT - ACT English 18+ OR SAT Evidence-based Reading and Writing 500+; USD Intensive English Program (IEP) Successful completion of USD’s Intensive English Program Level 3; ELS Language Center Successful completion of the ELS English for Academic Purposes level 112; Cambridge International Examinations - English subject A-Level with C or higher; International Baccalaureate (IB) - IB English A (4 or higher) or IB English B (6 or higher).
