Art Education is a studio-based Major program of study that professionally prepares artist-educators for creative careers as certified Visual Arts teachers. The Art Education Major combines hands-on studio art and art history instruction in the Art Department with esteemed teacher preparation in the College of Education.
The Art Education Major is done in conjunction with the Madonna University Secondary Provisional Teaching Certificate Program. Because Art Education is a State of Michigan “Comprehensive Major” a teaching minor is not required.
Students in the Art Education Major plus Teacher Certification Program:
learn to facilitate youth development of hand-skills, imagination, and creativity become fully prepared to lead Art learning in elementary, middle and high schools develop extensive expertise with Visual Arts lesson planning gain technical expertise to expertly connect Arts learning with other subject areas
PROGRAM FEATURES
Art Education Major students complete an in-depth series of Fine Arts, Art Education and Art History courses designed to provide extensive Art knowledge. Key program expectations include creating a comprehensive body of original artwork, developing a corresponding portfolio, and participating in exhibition opportunities. The teacher certification components include professional teacher preparation courses as well as field experiences and Directed Teaching in real world classrooms.
This Major’s coursework moves from introductory Art Foundations courses in Drawing, Painting, Ceramics and Printmaking, along with Computer Art and Photography courses, to student selected concentrations in one of these four areas. The required Art History courses are engaging, with hands-on creative learning and Detroit Institute of Arts and gallery field trips. A series of Art Education courses address specifics of teaching and learning in Art classrooms.
Successful completion of the Art Education Major, the Bachelor of Arts Degree and teacher certification requirements leads to award of a Provisional Teaching Certificate with Visual Arts Endorsement by the State of Michigan. This certificate qualifies graduates to teach Art to children and youth in Kindergarten through 12th grade educational settings. The program is also available “post-degree” to those who already hold a Bachelor’s Degree.
