在這里學(xué)什么?
The Barry R. Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema offers a master of fine arts degree in cinema arts with a concentration in one of the following areas: producing, directing, screenwriting, cinematography, post-production, or digital animation and visual effects. The three-year, 66-credit program prepares students for professional careers in their area of concentration through a combination of practical and theoretical courses.
Student Learning Outcomes
The underlying philosophy of the program posits a paradox: cinema, an art form, is the product of collaboration by craftspeople. The integration of creativity and craft, is the curricular emphasis here. This represents a marked departure from the prevailing trend in graduate film education, which tends to privilege either writer-directors or completely independent filmmakers. Each specialization comprises a discipline rather than a strict career path:
- Directing: Film is a director’s medium. Directors provide the creative vision and translate the written script into a finished product.
- Cinematography: The cinematographer is the director of photography, whose chief tools for artistic expression are lighting and lenses.
- Producing/production management: There are a broad range of producer responsibilities, which may include organizing a package of artistic talent, financing, and handling logistics of organizing the crew on and off the set.
- Post-production: After principal shooting, the main contributors to postproduction are the picture and sound editors and the composer and music supervisor.
- Screenwriting: The screenwriter may write an original script or prepare an adaptation from another medium.
When students complete their respective courses of study, they will have the skills and the experience to succeed in the full range of career opportunities within their discipline.
The curriculum is built on the use of the latest digital equipment and will stay current as innovative technology emerges. The various courses of study will reflect the reality that the very idea that filmmaking is in flux; no longer does it exclusively involve projected images in a darkened auditorium. The intent is to enable students to handle all aspects of commercial work whatever form it may take, from iPhones to IMAX.
The program is consistent with the institution’s mission and goal of providing highly skilled, technically forward-looking filmmakers capable of pursuing successful careers in the commercial, filmed entertainment industry in the city of New York and beyond. Central to the program is its embrace of the University's commitment to access and excellence. The program seeks attract students who reflect the rich cultural diversity of American society and recruits both locally, nationally and internationally.
