The B.A. degree, provide students with the conceptual foundation and knowledge necessary to analyze and apply current information concerning health and health care. Students are introduced to and will expand their knowledge of the basic science of health and health promotion; the philosophical underpinnings of health and health care in the United States; the multidimensional determinants of health; epidemiology and biostatistics; nutrition; and the provision and organization of health services. Through the selection of elective courses, students are also introduced to a wide variety of content-specific areas, including human sexuality, drugs and alcohol, women's health, children's health, and health education and counseling. B.A. students and B.S. students who concentrate in health science or public health are required to complete an internship. Through independent study courses, students also have the opportunity to work on research with a faculty mentor.
The B.A. degree is designed to provide students with the background to prepare for a variety of academic and career options. Students who complete these programs find work as entry-level administrators, health educators, or researchers within the public or corporate health care sector. Often students continue their education to obtain advanced degrees to pursue such professional careers as physicians, dentists, physician assistants, nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and social workers.
Student Learning Outcomes
Goal 1: Mastered relevant knowledge. This knowledge includes the biological, social and environmental aspects of health and nutrition
- Identify important health status indicators (e.g., major patterns and causes of mortality and morbidity) for individuals and populations locally, nationally and globally
- Describe the multiple biological, environmental, social and behavioral determinants of health
- Demonstrate knowledge about the organization and delivery of personal and public health services
- Understand health programs and policies
Goal 2: Acquired the ability to perform pertinent tasks. These tasks include the analytic and communication skills and techniques needed to function successfully as health and nutrition professionals.
- Identify and evaluate sources of health-related information and health research
- Apply knowledge of health status determinants to real world problems
- Communicate about health issues orally and in writing, including the writing of research papers based on evidence
- Conduct basic statistical and epidemiological analyses
Goal 3: Incorporated appropriate values. These values include a commitment to science and fostering equity in the work of health and nutrition professionals.

- Respect cultural diversity
- Show commitment to social justice, ethics and human rights
- Value standards of professional behavior
B.A. in Health and Nutrition Sciences -Concentration in Thanatology
A 57?–60? credit major suitable for students who wish to pursue health-related careers including community health, health education, and health administration. The Core Curriculum and required number of credits are the same as the B.A. in health and nutrition sciences concentration with the inclusion of 18 credits of thanatology-related course work.
