Teaching kids how to be healthy and practice good hygiene is only part of what a health education major covers. As a health education specialist, you could find yourself working in a community setting, on a college campus, hospitals or even in a corporate setting.
What Will I Learn?
You’ll start with the basics of human anatomy and physiology and progress with a variety of health classes along with preparation for student teaching. The following concentrations give you the option to specialize in a particular area of interest.

The concentration in the Health Department is intended to provide students with the background and skills needed to function on college campuses as health promotion and prevention specialists. These individuals typically work in a variety of health education areas including sexuality, alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, nutrition, HIV/AIDS, stress management, and health promotion. Responsibilities often involve conducting campuswide activities, developing peer education programs, and working with college offices in promoting the health of students.
Colleges across the country have been establishing campus programs and services which have as their central focus the reduction of health threatening behaviors and the promotion of student health. The focus of this concentration is to prepare individuals with the background and skills needed to work in this rapidly growing field.
This concentration in the Health Department links the areas of communication and health. It is designed to prepare students to work in careers that use communication approaches to inform and influence personal and community actions that enhance health and promote the quality of life.
