Design and Innovate.
Become the complete engineer with the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Dayton. We offer cooperative education, service-learning, and innovative design programs to help you achieve your goals and have a long history of innovation, design, aerospace manufacturing in our region, which benefits aspiring engineers. Your transition from student career to career in mechanical, aerospace or renewable and clean energy engineering is made easy. Along with a high retention rate through graduation, we have more co-op positions than we can fill, and a high job and graduate school placement rate. We must be doing something — our graduating seniors consistently rate their learning experience at UD as more effective than graduates from peer institutions!
Career Outlook
- A degree that makes you competitive in today's job market
- State-of-the-art laboratory facilities
- Professors respected by scholars
Plan of Study
Mechanical engineers apply principles of motion, energy, force, materials, and mathematics to design and analyze a wide variety of products and systems. The field requires an understanding of core concepts including mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, materials science controls. Mechanical engineers use these core principles along with tools like computer-aided engineering and product management to design and analyze manufacturing plants, industrial equipment and machinery, heating and cooling systems, automotive systems, aircraft, robotics, medical devices, and more. Today, mechanical engineers are pursuing developments in such fields as composites, mechatronics, and nanotechnology, and are helping to create a more sustainable future.
Program Details
Move from theory to real-world within our School of Engineering Innovation Center where you'll collaborate with fellow students on a project from start to finish and present your final results to your industry, small-business or social entrepreneur sponsor. And, our well-equipped laboratories in Kettering Laboratories and the Advanced Integrating Manufacturing Center (AIM) represent a large-scale engineering education center including:
- Aerospace Laboratory that includes a 150 mph wind tunnel and a fully programmable flight simulator.
- Energy Laboratory that provides computer data acquisition with a wide variety of experience in thermal and renewable energy systems.
- Biomechanics Laboratory that facilitates detailed experiments on human motion and balance.
- Materials Laboratory that gives students hands-on experience with metals, and composites.
Our Department leads by example and is committed to educating you in design, testing, manufacturing research. Classes are taught by professors who are known for their accessibility, advising and mentorship outside, as well as inside, the classroom.
