Psychology is the scientific study of mental and behavioral processes. Discover answers to questions about these processes while working with outstanding faculty with expertise in the many subfields of psychology. Contribute to new knowledge in the discipline through research with faculty or apply your learning in the community through a clinical practicum.
What you’ll study: The psychology major introduces students to psychology as a scientific discipline and they explore the theories and evidence that support current understanding of the field of psychology. Our curriculum is focused on the development of scientific literacy and strong analytic skills. A series of foundational courses prepares students for advanced work. Our program combines exceptional classroom instruction with hands-on learning experiences through completion of independent research, a practicum in clinical psychology, or both. Many students work on research teams and complete research projects under the direction of an individual faculty member. A variety of internships are offered at local businesses and social service agencies
How you'll learn more: Building on a solid core, students tailor the curriculum to their career goals and interests. Go deeper with extended coursework in different areas of psychology including developmental, social, clinical, cognition, biopsychology, evolutionary, and health psychology. NSU has a local chapter of Psi Chi, the international honor society which students are invited to join. Students have many opportunities for experiential learning through independent research with a professor and many of our students have presented original research at conferences and published in academic journals while at NSU.
Where it can take you: This degree will prepare you to synthesize, integrate and communicate knowledge. With numerous opportunities for community practicums and collaborative research, a degree from NSU in Psychology gives students the knowledge and hands-on experience to excel in graduate school or employment immediately after graduation. Employment options include research in various business settings; human resource management; statistical consultation; counseling and case management in social service and mental health settings; ABA therapy; and more.
