The study of law concerns the rules and the facts. Students at Duquesne will learn what the rules are and learn how to evaluate the facts utilizing the fundamental skills of the legal profession. Students acquire knowledge of the rules and the facts through broad, required courses, which are intended to provide the requisite skills to become a competent attorney in any field of practice.
Optional concentrations allow students to pursue a focused curriculum that corresponds to their particular areas of interest in the law. Students who have or develop a strong interest in practicing in a particular field may decide to concentrate. Students who want to take as broad a curriculum as possible may decide not to select a concentration. Concentrations are not required to receive the J.D. degree. Concentration advisement corresponds to faculty specialization and depth within areas of the curriculum.
By providing students with an opportunity to focus on various areas of practice, the Program plays a role in achieving the School of Law's learning outcomes, which focus on developing student knowledge, skills, and professional identity. The Concentration Program's framework also organizes the majority of the School of Law's course offerings in a way that makes the curriculum accessible to students.
