The Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science at Duquesne University aims to provide its students with a thorough understanding of the fundamental natural science that forms the backdrop for environmental science; providing them as it does so with a working knowledge of the range of environmental issues, including their scientific basis, ecological effects, environmental and social consequences, and ethical dimensions. Graduates will possess the ability to use scientific knowledge and critical thinking to gain better understanding of the natural environment and human environmental concerns. This will take place fully in the intellectual context established by the principles that shape the University Core Curriculum: Understanding and Knowledge; Intellectual Inquiry and Communication; Ethical, Moral, and Spiritual Development; Diversity and Global Mindedness; and Leadership and Service. Human influence on the environment promises to be one of the most pressing problems of the 21st century.
Learning Outcomes
CERE will produce graduates who:
- have a thorough understanding of the fundamental science within the natural sciences supporting environmental science;
- have a working knowledge of the gamut of environmental issues, including their scientific basis, environmental and social consequences, and ethical dimensions;
- have the ability to apply knowledge to activities that lead to a better understanding of the environment and environmental issues; and
- derive high value in the education received at Duquesne University.
Requirements for the Major
It is the Department’s belief that students should receive individual attention during their entire undergraduate career. Students plan a course of study in close cooperation with a faculty mentor and an undergraduate advisor; progress is closely coordinated with developing interests. Undergraduates are strongly encouraged to pursue independent research as an essential part of their educational program. Research permits students to develop an even closer relationship with a faculty Research Director, who then serves as a mentor during career planning.
