Ball State's bachelor's degree in visual arts with an emphasis in sculpture encompasses artistic traditions while teaching contemporary issues. Two faculty members maintain a spacious facility that includes a steel fabrication area, bronze and aluminum foundry, a mold-making facility, an outdoor area for stone carving, and a well-equipped woodworking and furniture studio.
When you sculpt, you are expressing yourself as an artist in three dimensions, combining expression and technique with mass, volume, and space. Sculptural art ranges from carved stone and wood to highly contemporary forms that integrate performance, installation, and technology into an aesthetic experience.
Consequently, in Ball State's sculpture concentration, you will learn traditional sculpture techniques along with more contemporary and experimental media and art forms. This will provide you with a full range of avenues for creative expression as a sculptural artist.
What You Will Study
The program allows you to find a three-dimensional voice and establish a personal vocabulary unrestricted by material and technical limitations. Among various other course work, you will take a three-dimensional imaging course, metalsmithing courses, ceramics courses, printmaking, and a range of art history courses covering ancient through modern traditions and explorations.
