Requirements for This Major
You can choose one of two degree paths in architecture:
- Bachelor of Architecture (BArch), a five-year professional degree program that prepares students for a more direct route into professional licensure as an architect. A professional graduate degree in architecture is not necessary with this degree; IF graduate study is pursued, it can be in any area of the student’s choosing.
- Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science (BA or BS) with a major in architecture, a four-year “pre-professional” degree that can be paired with a two-year master of architecture (MArch) professional degree to achieve the necessary degree for licensure. This degree path (a “4+2”) allows for more in-depth, topical investigations in architecture at the graduate level.
Our Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science (with a major in architecture) is ideal if you’re interested in pursuing a professional architecture degree at the master's level (an MArch), at Ball State or at another institution. Then you’ll be ready for a two-year master’s program to complete your professional accredited degree requirement necessary to pursue licensure as a professional architect. This undergraduate degree also prepares students for graduate studies in some other area because professional licensure as an architect is not your ambition. You’ll complete your undergraduate bachelor’s degree in four years.
