The M.Ed. special education degrees and certifications offered through SFA ONLINE provide graduate level preparation for careers in the classroom or in a professional administrative environment. Special education programs at SFA are aligned with national standards for special educators and state standards for special education teachers. The program uses a performance-based assessment system to rate student performance on key assessments in various classes in order to provide data for accreditation and for program improvement.
The graduate program in EC-12 Special Education and the graduate program for educational diagnosticians are both nationally recognized by the Council for Exceptional Children.
Degree and Certificate Options
M.Ed. in Special Education (initial teacher certification) The M.Ed. in Special Education program provides graduate level preparation in the area of disability awareness, instructional strategies, formal and informal assessment, and law. This M.Ed. and its accompanying certification would qualify an individual to teach in a Texas special education PK -12 public or private school setting.
M.Ed. in Special Education (without teacher certification)
Individuals who choose this M.Ed. typically either a) work in a state agency where teacher certification is not required or b) currently hold a Texas teacher certification in special education or a general education content area.
M.Ed. in Special Education with Educational Diagnostician Certification
The educational diagnostician program provides graduate level preparation in the area of special education, assessment, and law. An educational diagnostician is a master's level professional who works within the public school system to ensure that special education services are provided to eligible students in accordance with all applicable federal laws and regulations, state statutes, the Texas Education Agency, and the Commissioner of Education. The program consists of master's level coursework and preparation for certification as an educational diagnostician.

Generally, all applicants must have an overall undergraduate grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale and a 2.8 on the last 60 hours of undergraduate work. English Language Scores: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score - 79 IBT (Internet-Based) and 550 PBT (Paper-Based); International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score - Overall band 6.5; Pearson Test of English (PTE) score – 53.
