The mission of the Department of Elementary Education is to prepare undergraduate and graduate candidates to meet the teaching demands of a culturally diverse society in the twenty-first century. Through dynamic learner-centered programs that support lifelong learning, candidates learn the pedagogy and technology necessary to create classrooms for children in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.
Graduate course offerings are designed to improve the competence of early childhood, elementary, and middle school teachers and to prepare them for a variety of positions. Undergraduate preparation is extended and enriched through courses which provide opportunity to review current research in relevant fields, to conduct research in appropriate areas, to develop activities and curriculum materials, and to study emerging trends in elementary education, early childhood development, and reading.
The Master of Education may be completed with 30 semester hours of coursework and a thesis. A non-thesis program requires 36 semester hours of approved graduate coursework.
The program is designed primarily for individuals who plan a career as a classroom teacher or reading specialist (reading specialist is all-level) in an elementary or middle school. Contact the appropriate graduate advisor for information and the development of a degree plan.
